Russell has a reputation for fine dining, relaxing walks on the beach, and a calm and chill vibe that makes for a beautiful romantic location to explore during your stay in the Bay of Islands. It’s only a short walk and a very quick ferry ride from the Swiss Chalet Lodge Motel, so adding a day trip to your itinerary is a breeze.
So, you’ve set the day aside, now what will you do?
First of all: food. There are many delicious cafes and restaurants to explore during your Russell trip. Whether you’d like a casual cup of coffee or a fine dining experience, there’s something to suit your taste. For a wonderful fine dining experience, we would recommend trying The Duke or The Gables. Both have menus we adore and views of the harbour.
Perhaps you’d like to partake in a winery experience? Omata Estate Vineyard is a beautiful addition to your trip. Settle in for a wine tasting experience and a platter, and enjoy the beautiful water views.
If you love a bit of history, make sure you visit Pompallier Mission (a printing works built in 1842), Christ Church (built in 1836), and The Russell Museum, which will tell you all about the history of Russell and how it has changed over the years.
While you’re there, be sure to treat yourself to a bit of retail therapy. The South Sea Art Gallery offers locally crafted jewellery, arts, and crafts, and there are many more stores around the township to explore.
If you’re a nature lover, keep an eye out for weka who love to roam around the nature walks, like the Tapeka Point Track and even the Flagstaff Hill Historic Reserve.
Russell is truly a beautiful place for a romantic getaway. When you book your stay at the Swiss Chalet, be sure to ask us for further Russell recommendations for your trip.
